| UPDATE: Little
did I think when I wrote this that we'd be living the drama of Italia 90
all over again so exactly... It was heart breaking. After having played so well throughout the first round - I don't think anyone will forget Robbie Keane's 92nd minute equaliser (or the look on Mick McCarthy's face!). And then beating the overly confident Spanish at football, to see us loose to penalties, however I suppose what occurred 12 years earlier came back to haunt us. Well three cheers to the Irish team, especially Niall Quinn, Steve Staunton and Alan Kelly they've given us 14 years of great football memories.

Take a trip along with Stephen Rea, Shay Healy, George Hamilton and
more....on the question that has gone down along with the likes of Where
were you when... 'You heard about the JFK assassination?'...'Bishop Eamon Casey?...', 'Irish Songs Website?.....'
such age old questions, but to an Irish person, the one that is
remembered the best (or in some cases not remembered at all) and most certainly the fondest,
has got to be - "Where were you when O'Leary scored?" Everyone remembers George Hamilton's anxious voice on the TV, the score is four all, as Packie Bonner poses himself for the final penalty shoot-out...listen to what happened next! For those that were still conscious, the ecstasy when Packie saved it was something else...but then came the feeling of sheer anxiety, the adrenalin, and then O'Leary steps up... "Ah bollox". But wait, the reassuring voice reminds us of his experience, his skill, his absence from the Finals until this moment...you realise if you feel this nervous, how can O'Leary even hit the ball? An Eternity has
passed......you feel the need to get out of the room, down all the pints
you can see, but you're frozen...can't move, can't talk, can't look... Ireland v Romania |
